Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai tweeted her condemnation of the assassination attempt on Imran Khan, the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and a former Pakistan Prime Minister.

“Attacks on leaders of any political belief or party are always wrong. And violence is never an acceptable protest. Wishing @ImranKhanPTI a full recovery,” the 25-year-old wrote on Twitter.

Imran was attacked by two gunmen during a rally in Wazirabad in Pakistan’s Punjab Province. A shooter fired at the politician who was standing on top of his campaign truck. Imran was hit in the leg by three bullets. He has been reported to be in no immediate danger.

While one of the attackers was killed, the other was captured by bystander and handed over to the police. So far, nine people have been injured and one person has died.

A video of the captured attacker emerging with him saying that he had been planning the shooting ever since Imran began his reelection campaign in Lahore. When he was asked why he did it, the shooter said, “”I did this because he was misleading people. I couldn’t take it. I had decided to do this the day he started the rally.”

He had been stopped by a PTI youth party worker, Ibtisam Hassan who had noticed one of the gunman loading his gun to shoot at Imran. However, he tackled him from the back in an effort to prevent the gunman from getting any more rounds off. Nonetheless, one more round was still discharged. Ibtisam managed to point the gun downwards which lead to the capture of the gunman.

Currently admitted at the Shaukat Khanum Hospital in Lahore, the former Pakistan PM has accused the current PM Shehbaz Sharif of being behind the attack.

Malala has recently come back to her home country nearly 10 years since she was shot in the face by the Pakistani Taliban. She is currently in the country to visit the areas that were hit by the unprecedented monsoon flooding.
