The Jammu and Kashmir administration extended the detention of former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti by three months under the Public Safety Act on Friday.

Mufti, the PDP president, had been put under preventive custody hours before the Centre revoked Article 370 on August 5. The Article granted special status to the state. On August 5, the state was divided into two Union territories – Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Mufti will continue to remain under detention at her official residence Fairview Bungalow, which has been declared a subsidiary jail, the order issued by the Home Department said.

“The law enforcing agencies have recommended further extension in the period of detention and on examination, the same is considered to be necessary,” the order reads.

Earlier on Friday, Sajad Lone, chief of People’s Conference, was released from detention just five days short of a year since he was detained.  Most of the other mainstream politicians, including Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah, have been also released from custody.
