Twitter has temporarily suspended the account of Donald Trump Junior for posting “misleading and potentially harmful information” about coronavirus. The same tweet which was later re-shared by President Trump has been taken down.

“This account has not been permanently suspended. Per the screenshot, the Tweet requires deletion because it violates our rules (sharing misinformation on COVID-19), and the account will have limited functionality for 12 hours,” Twitter Comms said.

The tweet had promoted ‘hydroxychloroquine’ as a cure for COVID-19. It had a video in which people who claimed to be doctors were seen arguing, “one doesn’t need masks.” There is no scientific rationale for both arguments.

The news about the suspension was shared by the Republican strategist Andrew Surabian. He said that Twitter is a “threat to free speech” and that it was “continuing to engage in the open election interference.”

As a part of its efforts to curb the spread of misinformation and fake news, Twitter had been taking down accounts and posts which violate its policy. Trump had accused that the site’s topics are “really ridiculous, illegal, and, of course, very unfair”.

“So disgusting to watch Twitter’s so-called ‘Trending’, where so many trends are about me, and never a good one,” he had said.
