Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has now proclaimed his support for “centrist candidates,” signalling yet another shift in his ambiguous and transient political views.

Musk, who had last month claimed that he could “no longer support” Democrats and had instead said he would vote Republican, has now told former Democrat and Forward Party founder Andrew Yang that he will support measures that result in more centrist candidates being elected.

The exchange, expectedly, went down on microblogging platform Twitter, precipitated by a request from Yang.

“Hey [Elon Musk] could you implement #RankedChoiceVoting for Twitter polls? That would be a game changer for lots of people. Thank you!!,” wrote Yang, eliciting a reply from the world’s richest person.

“Is this a reference to open primaries? I think those are a good idea,” wrote Musk, adding, “I am in favor of anything that would result in more centrist candidates being elected!”

Musk’s comment, in turn, sparked a question from Twitter user @spideycyp_155, who asked the billionaire, “do u still intend to maintain an equality in political donations to both parties??”

It was then that Musk, who had earlier said he was a “moderate R,” clarified that he would “donate to centrist candidates in both parties.”

The 50-year-old’s latest comments are confounding to say the least, especially in light of his recent declarations on American politics.

Musk, who, by his own admission “voted overwhelmingly for Democrats historically,” signalled his move away from the party last month, calling the Democrats a “party of division & hate.”

He went on to say that he would “vote Republican” and even shared a graphic clearly illustrating his move away from both the “woke progressive” Democrats, as well as away from the centre of the political spectrum and towards the right.

About a month after posting the graphic, Musk again appeared to change his political stance, tweeting, “A party more moderate on all issues than either Reps or Dems would be ideal.”

Interestingly, that is precisely what Yang is trying to do with his Forward Party, which describes its ideology as “Not Left. Not Right. FORWARD.”

Given Yang’s attempts to create a third centrist political party in the US, one may have expected Musk to commit to the 47-year-old American politician’s goals.

However, the Musk’s proclamation that he is looking to donate to “centrist candidates” of both parties throws any such speculation into doubt.

That being said, given Musk’s consistently changing political opinions, there is no guarantee to what the billionaire might do next, especially as the US edges towards the mid-term elections in November.
