Ukrainian officials announced on Sunday that more than 1,200 bodies were found in the Kyiv region as Russia continued its assault on the Eastern European country. It was not clear if the remains were of civilians or armed forces personnel.

The increasing death toll, however, was not limited to Ukraine’s national capital. In the Eastern regions of the country, at least 57 people were killed after a missile struck the Kramatorsk railway station. Pavlo Kyrylenko, the governor of the Donetsk region, announced the revised death toll.

There has been a significant lag between the death toll announced by Ukrainian authorities and the one reported by the United Nations. According to reports from AFP, 4,232 civilian casualties — 2,439 injured and 1,793 killed– have been reported in Ukraine as of Sunday.

AFP reported that at least two corpses were recovered from a manhole at a fuel station in Kyiv on Sunday. The two individuals were reportedly wearing a mix of military and civilian clothing.

Other cities in Ukraine –including Kharkiv and Dnipro — were hit by Russian attacks that resulted in civilian casualties, officials said.

Kharkiv Governor Oleg Sinegoubov said that 10 people, including one child, were killed by Russian shelling on Ukraine’s second-largest city on Sunday. Russian missiles also targetted Dnipro, again. A rain of projectiles fired by Russian forces resulted in an uncertain number of casualties and nearly destroyed a local airport, AFP reported citing city officials.

The Russian Defense Ministry says its air-launched missiles hit Ukraine’s S-300 air defense missile systems in two separate locations, while sea-launched cruise missiles destroyed a Ukrainian unit’s headquarters in the Dnipro region.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s border guard agency says that about 2,200 Ukrainian men of fighting age have been detained so far while trying to leave the country in violation of martial law.
