The city of Naples has proposed to rename the Stadio San Paolo, home of SSC Napoli, to honour Argentine football legend and Napoli icon Diego Maradona.

“Let’s name the San Paolo Stadium for Diego Armando Maradona!!!” Mayor Luigi de Magistris tweeted on Wednesday.

Following the news of Maradona’s death, the stadium was illuminated to honour the Napoli legend as fans gathered outside in mourning, AFP reported.

Maradona was the star of the Napoli team in the late 1980s, leading them to their only Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990 along with a UEFA Cup in 1989.

His exploits with the club elevated him to godly status  in the southern Italian city, where fans on Wednesday poured out into the streets to mourn.

“Diego made our people dream, he redeemed Naples with his genius,” de Magistris tweeted, adding, “Diego, Neapolitan and Argentine, you gave us joy and happiness! Naples loves you!”

Meanwhile, Aurelio De Laurentiis, the president and owner of Napoli, told RMC radio, “it could be an idea” to name the stadium San Paolo-Maradona.

“Tomorrow I want to broadcast the images of his feats at the stadium,” he said.

Napoli are scheduled to play Croatian side HNK Rijeka at home on Thursday in the Europa League and a minute’s silence will be observed prior to kickoff.

Maradona, 60, died on Wednesday following a cardiac arrest, weeks after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain.
