United States Vice President Kamala Harris is set to meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week. The meeting is likely to hold substantial value as Harris’ native link to India may come up. Harris, who became the first female Vice President of US earlier this year, is connected to India through her mother.

Harris’ mother Shyama Gopalan is a civil rights activist from the city of Chennai and a cancer researcher. On the other hand, her father Donald Harris has native roots in Jamaica, according to media reports.

Harris, however, has adopted African American culture and often joined her mother in visits to India, ET reported.

In addition to being the first Indian-origin Vice President of the United States, Harris also became the first woman and the first African American to hold the position.

Prime Minister Modi is on a three-day visit to the United States and will be part of crucial diplomatic events, including a meeting with American President Joe Biden and will also attend the

Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) summit in Washington DC, which will include leaders from Australia and Japan too.

On the flip side, the US Vice President will also be occupied with multiple meetings with international leaders. Harris, according to reports from The Hindu citing White House statements, will meet Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on Wednesday and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of Ghana the next day.

Media reports suggest that PM Modi’s visit to the United States will touch base on crucial subjects like the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, technology and China, which is also the top priority of the QUAD grouping.

The developing situation in Afghanistan, which has now been taken over by the Taliban, is also likely to be a key talking point as India’s strategic location can be of substantial use.
