The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance that was formed to counter Russian aggression. But Moscow’s potato salad does not seem to be a threat to the 30-member group.

As multiple world leaders prepared to roll out new strategies against Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine, officials and journalists had found their new favourite dish at the summit’s canteen: Russian salad. The dish is typically prepared with peas, potatoes, carrots and mayonnaise.

Even though the items on the menu seemed to be limited, the Russian salad was sold out in hours, according to Reuters reports. “Russian salad at a NATO summit? I’m a little surprised by that choice of dish”, a journalist wrote told Spanish media outlet La Sexta.

A photo of the menu suggested that the Russian salad was also the cheapest item available. A single portion was being sold for €8. Other available dishes were: “assorted salads” (€9), “vegetable of the day” ( €11) and “cold tomato soup” ( €7.70).

Things were different for other senior diplomats who are attending the NATO conference this month. Defence and foreign ministers were served lunch at a banquet located inside Baroque Santa Cruz Palace in Central Madrid on Tuesday evening, according to Reuters reports.

Jose Andres, a popular Spanish chef who was also featured in Netflix’s ‘Chef’s Table’, was in charge of organising the feast. He reportedly prepared the classic tapa but added “tomato dumplings” to the menu and rebranded them as “Ukrainian salad”.

The NATO meeting, scheduled for June 28 to 30, comes as Russia has renewed its attacks on Ukraine. Days before the summit, a Russian missile struck a shopping mall in central Ukraine, killing more than 15 people. NATO also announced that Turkey had agreed to support Finland and Sweden‘s bid for the alliance’s membership.
