US President Joe Biden will not visit Ukraine any time soon, the White House said on Monday, debunking reports that suggested that the 79-year-old’s visit to the war-torn eastern European country was only a matter of time.

“Well, there’s no plans in the works at this time, and obviously, we’ll continue to assess,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was quoted as saying by CNN during a press conference on Monday.

“And as you know, we our objective is to reopen the embassy, to have our diplomats back there, not just traveling back and forth, but present in the country, and I know the President would love to visit Ukraine, but not, no plans in the works at this point,” Psaki added.

Rumours about Biden taking a trip to Ukraine surfaced on Sunday after US House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff suggested that a visit could be on the cards following the Nancy Pelosi-led Congressional delegation’s surprise visit to Kyiv.

Schiff, a Democrat from California, also hinted that Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky had requested additional aid from the US in the fight against Russia, but Psaki declined to comment on the matter.

Without directly answering the question, the White House Press Secretary said that the Biden-Harris administration would “continue to consult with and rely on the advice of the Department of Defense on what weapons systems and equipment the Ukrainians need to continue to succeed in the war.”

While the US has stepped up the supply of arms and ammunition to Kyiv, Biden is also pushing for an additional $33 billion in funding from Congress for supplemental aid to Ukraine.
