For the second consecutive week, Paris on Saturday witnessed violence at a mass protest against a new security law as the demonstrators clashed with police, burnt vehicles, and smashed windows.

The weekly nationwide protests have intensified with the police beating of a black music producer in France last month. The protests also witnessed the presence of yellow vests movement protesters, which shook French President Emmanuel Macron against a lack of equality in the country in 2018-19.

People in France, including media freedom and human rights groups, are protesting against the French government asking them to scrap or revise the new security bill, which will restrict the filming of police. Protesters have said the law would make it harder to prosecute cases of abuse.

Around 100 protests planned demonstrations in France on Saturday against the new law, of which 22 were detained by police in Paris, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin wrote on Twitter, saying they were facing “very violent individuals”

Objects were also thrown at police who responded by using tear gas, in a repeat of the violent scenes from the protests last weekend against the security law that would restrict publishing pictures of the faces of the police.

Protesters, some letting off smoke bombs and firecrackers, shouted slogans like “Everyone hates the police.

After four French police officers were charged November 30 over the beating and racial abuse of black music producer Michel Zecler, lawmakers from Macron’s party pledged a “complete rewrite” of part of the draft law.
