‘Partygate’ scandal may get a new twist soon as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson awaits a key report from civil servant Sue Gray. The investigation on Downing Street’s mid-lockdown party is likely to get wrapped up soon.

What has already happened?

Prime Minister Boris Johnson apologised Wednesday for attending a garden party during Britain’s first coronavirus lockdown but brushed aside demands that he resign for breaching the rules his own government had imposed on the nation.

The apology has attracted varied reactions from Johnson’s cabinet, some saying they support the Prime Minister while others demanding a resignation.

What to expect next?

The key outcome of the upcoming report will revolve around the need for “individual disciplinary action” for the Prime Minister and other officials. The Metropolitan Police force of London said that an investigation could be triggered any substantial evidence surfaces.

However, according to reports from Associated Press, Gray’s report may not hold much power in reality as it will make its way to the Prime Minister’s desk as a recommendation. Here it is Boris Johnson who is being investigated, making himself the arbiter of his own punishment.

“Operation Save Big Dog” is another outcome possible after the report is made public, media reports suggest. The plan reportedly includes terminating senior officials and aides of Boris Johnson, who will seek to shield himself from criticism.

The ‘Partygate’ controversy may also have political repercussions for the Conservative Party. Opposition Labour Party has successfully opened up a double-digit opinion poll lead.

Johnson doesn’t have to face voters’ judgment until the next general election, scheduled for 2024. But the Conservative Party has a history of ousting leaders once they become liabilities, according to reports from the Associated Press.
