An individual was detained in England’s York after he hurled eggs at King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla during their walkabout in the city. The individual, later revealed to be 23-years-old, also shouted slogans like “this country was built on the blood of slaves” and “not my king”.

The individual was later identified as Patrick Thelwell, an activist working with Extinction Rebellion.

The eggs missed the 73-year-old monarch as the royal couple greeted people at the city’s Micklegate Bar landmark. The people gathered booed the man with “shame on you” and shouted, “God save the King”.

Suzie Mercer, the sheriff of York, appeared to intercept one of the eggs hurled at the royal couple.

From images on social media, one egg landed at the feet of the King, who seemed unflustered and carried on as his protection officer moved closer to cover him.

The royal couple are in Yorkshire for a number of engagements including unveiling a statue of the late Queen Elizabeth II, the first to be installed since her death in September.

The visit is part of a traditional ceremony in which the UK monarch is officially welcomed to York by the city’s Lord Mayor and was last carried out by the Queen in 2012.

During the event, the newly crowned king said, “The late Queen was always vigilant for the welfare of her people during her life. Now her image will watch over what will become Queen Elizabeth Square for centuries to come.”

The 2-meter sculpture, which was finished in August—a month before the late Queen passed away—is built of French lepine limestone and weighs 1.1 tonnes. It was created to honour the late Queen’s platinum jubilee.

Social media was abuzz with the incident, with some users on Twitter pointing out, “It’s insane how calm Charles is during this”.
