The world’s oldest monarchy is struggling for its existence. After Princess Mako‘s marriage to longtime boyfriend Kei Komuro, Japan’s royal family has now been left with just 17 members: 12 women and five men. The number has dwindled from 67 at the end of World War II.

Princess Mako has not only been stripped of her royal status under Japan’s imperial laws, but has also turned down a 152.5 million yen ($1.3 million) that she would have been entitled to as part of dowry traditionally awarded to royal family women after marriage.

Japanese Emperor Naruhito’s 85-year-old uncle, Prince Masahito; his brother, Crown Prince Fumihito; and his nephew and Princess Mako’s brother Hisahito, age 15 are among the handful of men in line for succession.

Still, Japanese royal family has incurred the country’s taxpayers 25 billion yen ($219 million) this year in food, education, personal expenses and the salaries of 1,080 staff including chauffeurs, gardeners and archivists of imperial records, according to Bloomberg.

Japan Princess Mako’s marriage triggers media frenzy, divides public opinion

On Tuesday Princess Mako and Komuro submitted a marriage filing to the local government, following a three-year delay in their wedding caused by a financial dispute involving Komuro’s mother. Mako, 30, is the niece of Emperor Naruhito. She met Komuro while studying at Tokyo’s International Christian University. Komuro recently returned to Japan with a law degree from Fordham University in New York and the couple have announced plans to settle in the United States after their marriage.

The marriage has been the subject of extensive tabloid media coverage in Japan. Earlier this month, the Imperial Household Agency said Mako had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder due to online abuse. “She has been experiencing a persistent fear that her life is going to be destroyed, which makes her pessimistic and makes it difficult for her to feel happy,” the statement said.
