The Quad summit concluded on Tuesday in Tokyo with leaders of United States, India, Japan and Australia in attendance. The alliance focused on multiple pressing issues that were related to the Indo-Pacific region.

The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine was not mentioned in the joint statement released by the leaders. However, leaders of Australia, Japan and the United States brought it up in their individual remarks. US President Joe Biden said that the world has a “shared responsibility” to help Ukraine.

Here are key takeaways from the Quad meeting in Tokyo:

-Infrastructure

Member states of the Quad alliance jointly announced an infrastructure package worth $50 billion for the Indo-Pacific region. The amount will be invested over the next five years.

The infrastructure package was announced to “drive public and private investment to bridge gaps”, according to the joint statement.

-Climate change

The Quad alliance rolled out the Quad Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Package, dubbed Q-CHAMP. This initiative will focus on two major goals. These are:

1) Green shipping and ports aiming for a shared green corridor framework building on each Quad country’s input.

2) Clean energy cooperation in clean hydrogen and methane emissions from the natural gas sector.

The Quad fellowship

The Quad fellowship will focus on promoting the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field among students. It will bring 100 students from India, Japan and Australia to the United States each year to pursue graduate degrees, and will be administered by Schmidt Futures.

Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness

Quad countries agreed to jointly launch the Indo-Pacific Partnership for Maritime Domain Awareness initiative. This will majorly focus on increasing tracking and information sharing in the Indo-Pacific region. Media reports suggested that Quad will take measures to curb China’s illegal fishing in the region.
