Britain’s Queen Elizabeth died on Thursday, September 8, 2022. As a mark of respect, several sporting events in the country have been called off. The United Kingdom will be observing a national mourning period for the next 10 days.

Organizers of the BMW PGA Championship golf event immediately suspended play, with many players still out on the course at Wentworth. The course and practice facilities will be closed Friday.

The England and Wales Cricket Board said Friday’s play in the second test between England and South Africa at the Oval would not take place.

The board also said that “all scheduled matches in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy will not take place.”

Horse racing meetings in Britain were suspended on Thursday night and Friday, with the governing body wanting to “remember her extraordinary life and contribution to our sport and our nation”, news agency Associated Press reported.

Domestic rugby matches in England and Scotland were called off on Thursday and games will not be played over the weekend, either.

Friday’s stage in cycling’s Tour of Britain was canceled, with a decision on the final two stages over the weekend to be taken in due course.

Multiple sports fixtures, including the Premier League, will be postponed in the United Kingdom. Manchester United was one of the first English football clubs to pay a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

“The club recognises her immense contribution to public life, including sport, both here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth, and around the world”, the statement read.

The US Open games, which are underway in New York City, will not be disrupted. However, organisers of the competition will give a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II in their own way. A moment of silence will be observed at the Women’s semifinal game between Caroline Garcia and Ons Jabeur.
