Representative Adam Schiff, who is the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, urged the administration of US President Joe Biden to make “every effort” to prevent any further attacks on the people of America and their allies.
Schiff, who is lawmaker in the United States House of Representatives, said that he was “devastated” by the news of a United States armed forces personnel dying in Afghanistan in the twin bombing attack on Thursday. He added that he was worried about further blood shed in Afghanistan.
“Every effort must be made to prevent those responsible for this brutality from further victimizing innocent seeking safe harbor”, Schiff said in a statement on Thursday.
He added, “Our immediate task remains to assure the safe withdrawal of American civilians, diplomatic personnel, and U.S. service members and the evacuation of the Afghan partners who have served and sacrificed alongside us, as well other individuals at imminent risk, such as journalists, civil servants, women, and civil society advocates”, according to media reports from Washington Times.
ISIS claimed responsibility for the series of bombs in Afghanistan’s Kabul on Thursday. However, hours before the announcement was made Schiff said that he suspected the involvement of the Islamist group.
Schiff, who is a member of the Democratic party, added that the Intelligence Committee of the United States House of Representatives was maintaining “intense oversight” over the unfolding situation in Kabul, which has been overtaken by the Taliban earlier this month.
The lawmaker, who is 61 years old, said, “I am devastated to learn that American service members and Afghan civilians were killed and wounded in attacks in and around the Hamid Karzai International Airport. My heart and thoughts are with their families and friends”, according to reports from Washington Times.
Recent reports, which are citing statements from the United States Department of Defense, suggest that the American death toll from the twin blasts in Kabul had bumped up to 13.
