After two years as justice secretary and lord chancellor, Robert Buckland is no longer in Boris Johnson’s government.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland confirmed his departure from Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s cabinet, saying it was an “honour” for him to serve in the role and is now looking out for his “next adventure.” 

This comes as the UK prime minister is overhauling his government, aiming at fresh start on his team after trailing in the polls and to focus on rebuilding the economy after the pandemic.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson was the first casualty of the reshuffle triggered by Johnson.

Williamson had been facing criticism over handling of school closures and exams during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He was also under fire earlier in September for confusing two black campaigning sportsmen.

He claimed to have met with soccer player Marcus Rashford when in fact it had been rugby player Maro Itoje.

Johnson’s priority is tackling regional inequality but the COVID-19 pandemic spoiled his government’s plans making the promises he made before election redundant.

The cabinet reshuffle had been long time coming with his cabinet members being criticised for months.

Johnson is finally on his way to what is expected to be a better performing government.

The UK prime minister wanted to have reshuffled his cabinet a while ago to better be able to make the changes needed to fulfil his “levelling up” agenda.

Boris Johnson became the UK prime minister after winning the biggest Conservative Party parliamentary majority since Margaret Thatcher in 2019.
