Robert Durst was convicted of murder of his friend Susan Bremen on September 17. The 79-year-old will most likely be given a life sentence without a chance of parole. The last trial of New York real estate heir and notorious serial killer, Robert Durst, was an intense affair. A Los Angeles court had been repeatedly hearing Robert admit he was a liar and a perjurer for the last four months.

Although Durst said he was looking forward to “making a fool” of the prosecution, the lead prosecutor, cold case specialist John Lewin, hammered him so hard enough for 38 hours that the judge had to ask Lewin to stop. “At some point, there’s a limit,” the judge said.

From Lewin volunteering to change Durst’s urine bag in June to another bizarre argument over a photograph of a soup bowl filled with cockroaches last week, the events during the trial were lurid, if anything. Interestingly, Durst’s two high-priced lawyers re-enacted a 2001 shooting death involving him and tussled with each other on the courtroom floor, to which Durst reacted, saying, “That’s a full-service law firm.”

As Durst’s case was summed up last week, the prosecutors analysed his ever-changing stories and theories about why he lied. Durst went on to say on the witness stand, “I have lied about several things.”

Lewin’s co-counsel, Habib Balian, proved his lies had a toxic effect by showing pictures – one of a cockroach dangling over a bowl of soup, and the other a bowl crawling with dozens of cockroaches.

“That’s disgusting!” judge Mark Windham exclaimed

“The man dismembered a body,” Balian reacted. “So the cockroaches over a bowl of soup pale in comparison.” The photographs were later accepted for closing arguments.

“Don’t let [Durst] run from the truth any more,” Balian said.  “He has gotten away with murder too long.”

Dick DeGuerin, Durst’s lead lawyer, said in response that there was no evidence that connected the gun that killed Berman to Durst.  “I wouldn’t blame you after hearing what you’ve heard … if you hate Bob Durst and believe he’s a liar,” DeGuerin told the jury. “But being a liar doesn’t make him a killer.”

His sentencing hearing is scheduled for October.
