Multiple victims were shot in a  Columbia Machine factory in Smithsburg, Maryland, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

During a press briefing, Gov. Larry Hogan said “potentially three people” were killed in the shooting and the suspect exchanged fire with a state trooper, hitting him in the shoulder.

The state trooper shot the suspect back.

“The suspect is no longer a threat to the community,” police said.

The Sheriff’s Office further added that it is investigating the incident. Smithsburg  is a town in Washington County, 75 miles west of Baltimore.

The officer responeded to a report of a shooting at the 12900 block of Bikle Road about 2:30 PM ET, as per baltimore.cbslocal.com. 

The ATF Special Agents responded to assist the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. 

“FBI Baltimore is responding to assist our partners in the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with a shooting incident in Smithsburg, MD, where there are multiple victims. WCSO will provide an update at approximately 5:45 PM,” the state agency tweeted.

David Trone, the US Rep of the district, said his office is actively monitoring a “mass shooting” in Smithsburg.

“If you’re local, please stay way from the area as law enforcement responds,” he said.

Columbia Machine offers “complete equipment lines to customers in over 100 countries,” according to their website.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office said although the area is still a “very active scene,” it is believed there is not threat to the public at this time.
