The first-ever ‘Super Mario’ theme park will open in February, Universal Studios Japan said on Monday, reported AFP.

Featuring a real-life Bowser’s Castle and an interactive “Mario Kart” ride, the attraction (‘Super Nintendo World’) in the city of Osaka was originally planned to open in July 2020, ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. It was, however, delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic along with the Games, which have been postponed to next summer.

The attraction will now be open to visitors from February 4.

This will be Nintendo’s first foray into theme parks, and USJ calls it an “immersive land featuring Nintendo’s legendary worlds, characters and adventures where guests will be able to play inside their favourite Nintendo games”, reported AFP.

Some rides will reportedly feature Augmented Reality (AR) headsets. A wristband linked to one’s smartphone will also allow visitors to collect virtual coins and items, like in the popular Mario games. A ride based on the character of the dinosaur Yoshi is expected to be in the works.
