Husband of Britain%u2019s Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Prince Philip Mountbatten also called Duke of Edinburgh died at the age of 99. His death was announced by Buckingham Palace on April 9, 2021.  He has been the longest-serving Royal consort in British history.

Duke of Edinburgh had been a public figure for many years, but the blockbuster TV series %u2018The Crown%u2019 introduced a different side of Prince Philip to the upcoming generation. Actors Matt Smith assayed the role of young prince Philip whereas Tobias Menzies stepped in the shoes of Duke of Edinburgh in the third and fourth seasons.

The duke was born in Greece, but his family was exiled from the country when he was eighteen months old. He joined the royal navy in 1939, where he began corresponding with the thirteen-year-old Princess Elizabeth. During the Second World War, Philip served in the British Mediterranean and Pacific fleets with distinction. After the war was over, he was granted permission to marry Elizabeth by King George VI.

Philip abandoned his Greek and Danish titles and styles became a naturalised British subject and adopted his maternal grandparents’ surname Mountbatten before they both announced their engagement in July 1947. 

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth had four children Charles being the first one he was often called the Prince of Wales. Soon he was joined by Anne, Princess Royal Prince Andrew, Duke of York, and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex. Prince Philip served as chairman of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a self-improvement program for young people aged 14 to 24.

One thing that didn%u2019t go well for Prince Philip was his outspoken right-wing views, the public expression of which he sometimes found hard to resist which occasionally led to embarrassment to the monarchy trying to put aside its traditional upper-crust image.

Apart from that he engaged in a variety of philanthropic endeavours and also served as president of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) from 1981 to 1996. On Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, she conferred on him the title and office of lord high admiral, the titular head of the Royal Navy.
