United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to present a three-tiered alert system for COVID-19 cases in England on Monday. Johnson’s government is seeking to balance bringing down the rate of new infections rise against concerns of the economy.
The new alert system will supposedly classify all areas as “medium”, “high” or “very high” risk and is an attempt to bring transparency and uniformity to restrictions introduced to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
Rishi Sunak, UK Finance Minister on Friday said he would pay up to two-thirds of staff monthly wages to firms that have been forced to close over the winter month under the new system’s highest level of lockdown.
Many urban centres in northern England have been hit hard with a range due to curbs imposed that have put a halt on the social life of the people.
Several Mayors representing northern England cities, including Manchester and Liverpool, have said that the new support system will fall short for those on minimum wages, like bar staff, kitchen workers, and self-employed people including taxi drivers and security guards.
Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own devolved governments and separate health systems. Pubs across central Scotland have closed for just over two weeks to try to cut the close-contact transmission.
The UK PM will present the new system in the parliament on Monday for the nation that witnessed more than 42,000 deaths from the coronavirus. MPs will be called to vote on the new measures later this week, AFP reported.
