Strewed on the Ukrainian streets of Bucha, tied corpses of civilians do not “look far short of genocide,” British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday.

“When you look at what’s happening in Bucha, the revelations that we are seeing from what (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has done in Ukraine, which doesn’t look far short of genocide to me, it is no wonder that people are responding in the way that they are,” he told reporters, according to Reuters.

“And I have no doubt that the international community – Britain very much in the front rank – will be moving again in lockstep to impose more sanctions and more penalties on Vladimir Putin’s regime,” Johnson added.

Comparing civilian killings by Russian forces in Bucha to the genocide in Bosnia in 1995, British Health Secretary Sajid Javid said on Wednesday that the world must come together to put an end to brutal killing sprees in Ukraine.

The deaths in Bucha, a town that lies on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, have triggered global outrage and have further boosted sanctions against Russia from the West.

In a video uploaded on Twitter by the official handle of Johnson’s office, the British leader described Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war crimes as a “stain on the honour of Russia” and that they “betray the trust of every Russian mother who proudly waves goodbye to her son as he heads off to join the military.”

“Those responsible will be held to account. And history will remember who looked the other way. Your president is committing war crimes. But I cannot believe he’s acting in your name,” he told Russians.
