Ukraine’s government declared on Sunday that it has suspended the export of certain food products.

“Meat, rye, oats, buckwheat, sugar, millet and salt,” exports will be halted, according to a Ukrainian government statement.

According to the announcement, exports of wheat, corn, poultry, eggs, and oil will be permitted only with the approval of the Ministry of Economy.

As supply channels become increasingly problematic, supermarkets across the country are running out of vegetables.

Ukraine has issued export licences for its important agricultural commodities wheat, corn, and sunflower oil, according to a government resolution cited by Interfax Ukraine on Sunday.

According to the paper, traders would also require licences to export chickens and eggs, according to the agency.

Ukraine is a major producer and exporter of grain and vegetable oils in the world.

The world’s top exporter of sunflower oil has also stated that it will export more than 60 million tonnes of grain in the 2021/22 July-June season, including 33 million tonnes of corn and 23 million tonnes of wheat.

Ukraine had stopped shipments of various agricultural items earlier on Sunday in response to Russia’s invasion of the country. Exports of rye, oats, millet, buckwheat, salt, sugar, meat, and livestock have been halted.

State-run Meanwhile, Ukrainian Railways has stated that it is prepared to organise agricultural exports by rail as soon as possible following the shutdown of the country’s Black Sea ports due to the armed assault.

Ukraine has always shipped grain, vegetable oils, and other food products.

Ukrainian Railways stated that it may bring grain to the borders of Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland, from which it may be transferred to European ports and logistics centres.

As of Feb. 23, Ukraine had exported 43 million tonnes of various grains in the 2021/22 season, according to the agriculture ministry.

Ukraine raised grain production by 32% to 85.7 million tonnes in 2021.
