The victims of the Uvalde school shooting are moving against Daniel Defense, the manufacturer of the semiautomatic rifle used in the massacre of more than 20 people in Texas last week. The efforts of the victims can soon snowball into a full lawsuit.

Alfred Garza, the father of 10-year-old Ameri Joe Garza, sent a letter to Daniel Defense on Friday demanding the organisation’s marketing strategy for young people. Ameri Joe Garza was one of the 19 children killed in Robb Elementary School, Uvalde.

While no new formal legal action has been initiated against Daniel Defense after the shooting, the letter from the Garza family threatened a lawsuit. “We ask you to begin providing information to us now, rather than force Mr. Garza to file a lawsuit to obtain it”, the letter read, according to Reuters reports.

Uvalde gunman Salvador Ramos, 18, killed 19 children and 2 teachers with his semiautomatic rifle on May 24. He legally purchased the weapon for his recent birthday.

Josh Koskoff is the legal representation for the Garza family. Koskoff is the attorney who headed the case against gunmaker Remington after the Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. The lawsuit eventually resulted in a settlement that was worth $73 million.

“Sandy Hook in Connecticut is not binding on the Texas court but that doesn’t mean it lacks persuasive power”, Koskoff said, as per Reuters.

Gun manufacturers in the United States are mostly shielded by the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, a federal law that minimises the accountability of the gunmaker. However, US President Joe Biden on Thursday appealed to Congress to repeal such laws that protect gun manufacturers.

Emilia Marin, an employee of the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, sought to depose gunmaker Daniel Defense after filing a notice in Texas state court. The deposition was proposed with the motive of retrieving marketing documents from Daniel Defense.
