In a statement issued Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his re-election as President of France.

“I sincerely wish you success in your state activities, as well as good health and well-being,” reads the Kremlin-published message.

Macron received 58.55 percent of the vote in the French presidential election, according to results released by the French Ministry of Interior on Sunday night.

Marine Le Pen, his right-wing opponent, received 41.45 percent of the vote.

Macron has made consistent efforts to mitigate peace between Russia and Ukraine. He is one of the few world leaders to have engaged with Putin in direct dialogue since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24.

According to a statement from state broadcaster CCTV, China’s President Xi Jinping greeted his French colleague, saying he would “like to continue working with President Macron to maintain diplomatic relations based on independence, mutual understanding, foresight, and mutual benefit.”

The Chinese leader went on to explain that he has always seen Chinese-French relations from a “strategic and long-term perspective,” and that the healthy and steady growth of relations is becoming increasingly crucial as the global arena faces “complex changes.”

Following Macron’s victory over Marine Le Pen by a large margin, European Council President Charles Michel, as well as the prime ministers of Belgium and Luxembourg, were among the first to congratulate him, followed by practically all of the bloc’s 27 leaders.

“Bravo Emmanuel,” Michel tweeted in French.

“In this turbulent period, we need a solid Europe and a France totally committed to a more sovereign and more strategic European Union,” he further wrote.

Though polls suggested Macron would win the second round of the French presidential election on Sunday, the experience of the United Kingdom’s surprise choice to leave the EU and Donald Trump’s election in the United States in 2016 had some worried about an election upset.
