A chaotic scene was reported from inside Mexico’s Cancun International Airport on Monday following a loud sound, which resembled that of a gunfire or a blast.

Images shared on Twitter showed tourists panicking after the loud noise was heard.

“At the airport in Cancun waiting for a flight and just saw a herd of people running and screaming towards me. People ducking behind counters and chairs. People seem to think someone had a gun, but security can’t confirm. Terminal has at least partially been evacuated,” journalist Joshua Freeman wrote on Twitter.

Several videos surfaced on social media showing terrified passengers seeking shelter. People are said to have been trampled on as the crowds desperately tried to reach safety.

“Terminal 3 operations were temporarily suspended to guarantee passenger safety, which was never at risk,” Cancun Airport’s Emergency Operations Centre said, according to local newspaper De Peso.

The Secretary of Public Security of Quintana Roo, Lucio Hernández Gutiérrez, assured through their official Twitter account that no injuries were reported following the incident.

Later, Mexico’s National Guard said no shots were fired in the international airport. There were no reports of casualties.

No evidence of gunshots in the airport, the National Guard wrote on Twitter, adding that “available information indicates that the sound could have been caused after a tourist accidentally knocked down three billboards.”

They are still investigating the incident.

Earlier, the US embassy to Mexico said it was aware of reports of a “security incident” at the airport. The embassy urged its citizens to check with local authorities and monitor news for updates.
