Croatia and
Morocco will play FIFA World Cup 2022’s third-place play-off at Khalifa Stadium
on Monday. Alongside playing for pride and a respectable third place, the two
sides are also clashing for a significant amount of money.

What’s the
prize money for third place at the World Cup?

The overall
prize money for the 2022 World Cup is $440 million. The team that comes third will take home $27 million while
the fourth-place finisher will have to be satisfied with $25 million.

Croatia lost 0-3 to Argentina courtesy of a penalty by Lionel Messi and
a brace by Julian Alvarez (one of those was brilliantly assisted by Messi) while
Morocco allowed their opponents to score against them for the first team in the
tournament, succumbing to a 0-2 defeat to France. Both sides suffered their
first losses of the World Cup.

The two teams will be meeting in the event for the second
time after having played a match in the round-robin stages in Group F. The game
ended in a scoreless draw. Since it is a knock-out match, a draw in real time will
not end in a tie and the match may see extra-time, penalty and sudden death in
that order.

Interestingly, the two sides clashed in a gut-wrenching
encounter 26 years ago in 1996 when after 2-2, the match went to shootouts, had a
2-2 tie even there, only to finally be separated in the sudden death while
Croatia won 5-4. With the two teams having been the most defensively
compact and solid sides in the event, a penalty shoot-out possibility is very
much on the cards.

The match will once again put the famed goalkeepers, Dominik Livaković of Croatia and Yessine Bounou of Atlas Lions while the defense lineups will also be pressured to live up to their lofty records.
