The Crown is all set to begin its production for season 5 in July this year. Taking over the role from Olivia Colman, Imelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth ll in season 5 and 6 of The Crown. As far as the storyline of the Queen is concerned, with The Crown season 4 ending on the point where Margaret Thatcher gave her resignation, it is expected that season 5 of The Crown may set sail from the 1990s %u2013 the “annus horribilis” (as described by Queen Elizabeth ll).

This would certainly give Imelda a lot to work with, as the Queen has previously described 1992 as her %u201Cannus horribilis%u201D (horrible year). It was during 1992 that the Queen faced multiple marriages coming to an end within the Royal Family.

Queen’s only daughter Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips divorced in 1992, followed by the separation Prince Charles and Princess Diana and subsequently Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York separated too. Though 1992 might have been exceptionally challenging, this decade soon became even more devastating.

It was five years later in 1997 that the Princess of Wales tragically passed away. The Queen went on to address the nation following the death of Princess Diana and declared her late daughter-in-law an %u201Cexceptional and gifted human being%u201D. Her Majesty also spoke of how the Royal Family had been trying to %u201Chelp William and Harry come to terms with the devastating loss that they and the rest of us have suffered%u201D.

Not much is known whether The Crown season 5 will cover this heartbreaking time, though it%u2019s thought likely that if it does not, The Crown season 6 might do so. If this does happen, then viewers could potentially see Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth during this time period, supporting her grandsons.
