Elon Musk’s upcoming takeover of Twitter attracted an indirect reaction from the White House, hours after the board of directors agreed to the $44 billion offer from the Tesla and SpaceX CEO. “Our concerns are not new”, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said when asked about the new deal.

“The president has long talked about his concerns about the power of social media platforms, including Twitter and others, to spread misinformation”, Psaki said in the daily White House briefing, according to reports from Wall Street Journal.

The White House also touched base on two related pressing issues: Recalling Section 230 and the intervention of the United States Congress.

“We engage regularly with all social media platforms about steps that can be taken. That has continued, and I am sure will continue, but there are also reforms that we think Congress could take”, Psaki said.

What is Section 230?

Section 230, a legislation that has been long opposed by mostly Democratic lawmakers in Washington DC, is designed to limit the liability of social media platforms. The law protects such companies from legal implications that may be connected to the content posted by a user.

The Donald Trump factor

While the White House did not comment on the matter, former President Donald Trump coming back to Twitter had been on the minds of several American lawmakers. However, Trump axed all the buzz and said that he will be continuing on his platform TruthSocial and not re-join Twitter after Elon Musk takes over.

US Congress and Musk’s new deal

While most Democratic lawmakers voiced their concerns, numerous Republican legislators were seen celebrating Elon Musk’s takeover. The Tesla CEO has spoken against Twitter censoring its users and restricting “free speech and transparency.”
