British Prime Minister Boris Johnson married his fiancee Carrie Symonds in a “secret ceremony” at Westminster Cathedral on Saturday, British media reported.

When her then-boyfriend Boris Johnson became the prime minister of the UK in a landslide victory in December, Carrie Symonds became the other half of the first unmarried couple to live at Downing Street— the first of many firsts.

Boris was unusual for having a partner who had a political career — long before she even met him.

The 33-year-old was born in southwest London to Matthew Symonds, one of the founders of the Independent newspaper, and the newspaper’s lawyer Josephine McAffee. She studied art, history and theatrical studies at Warwick University.

Symonds has had a successful political career, having been a member of the campaign team that helped Johnson win re-election as mayor of London in 2012.

At the age of 29, Symonds became the Conservative Party’s youngest-ever director of communications. Analysts believe she was instrumental in cleaning up Johnson’s notoriously unkempt demeanour during the presidential campaign.

Symonds currently works as a senior consultant for the Oceana conservation organisation, and her Twitter page is full of posts about anything from overfishing to trophy hunting bans.

In early 2019, the media began to associate Symonds with Johnson romantically. After 25 years of marriage, Johnson and his second wife and childhood friend Marina Wheeler, announced their divorce in 2018. They are the parents of four children.

Since Johnson’s election as Prime Minister in 2019, he and Symonds, 33, have been living together at Downing Street.
