Marlene Schiappa, a French minister has received backlash from members of her party after she posed for the cover of Playboy magazine.

Schiappa did a 12-page interview on women’s and LGBT rights for the magazine and also appeared on its cover wearing a white dress. Schiappa is the current Minister for the Social Economy and French Associations and has been working for the government since 2017.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who is from the same party as Schiappa, has criticized the latter for her appearance on the cover. Borne told her it “wasn’t appropriate, especially during this period.”

Schiappa, who is known for being a long-time advocate for women’s rights, defended her decision in a tweet on Saturday, saying: “Defending the right of women to have control of their bodies, that’s everywhere and all the time. In France, women are free. With all due respect to the detractors and hypocrites.”
