Initially, the tests conducted on Chatterton did not reveal any specific cause for her deteriorating condition. However, her health continued to worsen. Eventually, doctors identified the presence of necrotizing fasciitis, a rare flesh-eating bacteria known for its rapid spread throughout the body.
Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening bacterial infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It typically enters the body through a break in the skin or after a blunt trauma. Individuals with weakened immune systems, such as those during pregnancy and childbirth, are particularly vulnerable to contracting the infection.

Chatterton’s situation required immediate surgical intervention. She underwent two operations within two days, which she believes occurred just in time to save her life, as she expressed in an interview with the Harwich and Manningtree Standard.

Despite enduring a challenging journey, Chatterton’s resilience prevailed, and she remained grateful for her survival.
