Chris Stirewalt, a former editor for Fox News, is among the witnesses testifying in Monday’s hearing of the House Select Committee’s investigation into the events of January 6, 2021 that culminated in the storming of the US Capitol.

Stirewalt has been named among the witnesses as he was part of the team that, on election night in 2020, projected that now-President Joe Biden would win the state of Arizona.

However, Stirewalt’s decision to call the state for Biden reportedly infuriated then-President Donald Trump and his top associates, some of whom reportedly called up top Fox leadership to complain about Stirewalt’s relatively early call.

Although Biden ultimately ended up winning Arizona, Stirewalt was let go by Fox News, a move which he described as “firing” in an opinion piece for the Los Angeles Times a few weeks after the shocking events of January 6.

“I was proud of our being first to project that Joe Biden would win Arizona, and very happy to defend that call in the face of a public backlash egged on by former President Trump,” the former Fox News editor had written in the article.

Commenting on his call-up as a witness, Stirewalt, on Friday, told the press that he hoped this testimony would give people a “clear eyed and sturdy footed knowing that we can keep our constitutional system in place.”

“This is the first time in the history of the country that we really threatened the peaceful transfer of power. We need to make sure that doesn’t happen in 2024,” Stirewalt further said.

While it is currently unclear what Stirewalt’s testimony will contain, the House Select Committee had earlier said that its second hearing would focus on evidence on how Trump and his associates knew that there was no credibility to their claim of election fraud.

Originally from Wheeling, West Virginia, Stirewalt worked at several news organisations before joining Fox News in 2010. After his departure from Fox after more than 10 years of service, Stirewalt worked as a contributing political editor for The Dispatch, and currently works in the same capacity at NewsNation.
