Vice President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner was the target of an
assassination attempt on September 1
, 2022. A man who was waiting outside her
residence in Argentina capital Buenos Aires shot at her, but the gun failed and
no shots were fired. The man was arrested on the scene. Local police have
identified the gunman as Fernando Andre Sabag Montiel, a Brazilian with
criminal records. Argentina President Alberto Fernandez said, “This is the most
serious event since we recovered our democracy.”

Christina Fernandez de Kirchner?

Christina
Fernandez de Kirchner is an Argentine lawyer and politician. She was appointed
Argentina’s vice president in 2019. She also served as the country’s vice president
from 2007 to 2015 and the first lady during Nestor Kirchner’s presidency.

Christina
Fernandez de Kirchner was born on February 19, 1953 in La Plata, Buenos Aires
Province. Her father Eduardo Fernandez, a bus driver and an anti-Peronist,
while her mother Ofella Esther Wilhelm was a Peronist union leader. Christiana’s
grandparents were Spanish immigrants.

She first
started studying psychology but later moved to law. It was in college where he
met her future husband Nestor Kirchner in 1973. It was also there where she was
introduced to Peronism and left-wing politics.  

Christina
Fernandez de Kirchner  ideologically
identifies as a Peronist and a progressive. Her political approach is called
Kirchnerism. De Kirchner has also served two terms as Argentina President.
During her two terms, a volley of corruption scandals surfaced and she was
charged for fraudulent low-price sales of dollar futures. She was acquitted
later.

In 2015,
Kirchner was indicted for obstructing the probe into the 1994 AMIA Bombing. In
2017, Christina Fernandez de Kirchner was charged with treason but could not be
arrested on account of her parliamentary immunity. The treason charge was
dropped later. The next year, she was for corruption alleging her
administration accepted bribes in exchange for public work contracts.
