David Hunter, aged 75, broke down in tears in a Cypriot court as he shared details about his final months with his terminally ill wife before ending her suffering.

Who is David Hunter?

Hunter is accused of murdering his wife of 46 years at their home in Paphos in December 2021. He is a retired miner from Northumberland in Great Britain. Speaking in the court, Hunter stated that his 74-year old wife Janice had cried and begged him to kill her for weeks.

She was diagnosed with blood cancer and had to go to the capital Nicosia every week for procedures and injections. Due to Covid restrictions, the retired miner was forced to care for her at home as she deteriorated in front of his eyes.

He testified before the court that his wife was left crying in agony every single day. He described how his adolescent sweetheart’s blood cancer had left her unable to stand, forced to wear diapers, and covered in skin lesions.

He said, “I don’t remember a lot of the last day. I went to make a cup of coffee and she started crying.” “The next thing I knew I put my hands on her,” he said, adding, “When it was finished, she was a grey color. She didn’t look like my wife, and it was the first time I cried in many years.”

Describing her agony, Hunter told Paphos District Court, “She was lying down, she was in pain, suffering. I would do anything to help her. The last thing on my mind was to take her life. The last thing.”
