The gunman who opened fire in the parking lot of Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday has been identified by authorities as Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol.

The shooting took place just before 2.30 pm on Sunday. The 38-year-old opened fire, killing three people. The deceased have been identified as Rosita Furigay, a former mayor of Lamitan town in southern Basilan province, her aide Victor George Capistrano and a university guard. Furigay’s daughter, Hannah, sustained serious injuries in the shooting and rushed to a local hospital for treatment.

Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol was later taken into custody by cops near the gate of the university while he was attempting flee the scene. He was armed with two pistols when he was arrested.

Yumol is a resident of Basilan. According to the preliminary investigation by the National Capital Region Police Office, Yumol held grudge against Furigay for not doing much to stop the spread of illegal drugs, Philippine News Agency reported. 

Furigay also allegedly ordered the closure of his clinic in Lamitan City recently, Abogado reported. 

“The PNP (Philippine National Police) immediately responded to the scene of the incident and the gunman was arrested right away. Probe is ongoing and appropriate charges will be filed against the suspect. PNP OIC (Officer-in-Charge) Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. assures everyone that the PNP is on top of the situation and stiffer security measures are being implemented especially in Quezon City and the rest of Metro Manila,” the PNP said in a statement.

The suspect is also reportedly facing 26 cybercrime charges in Zamboanga City.

Investigators were trying to determine the exact motive for the attack. The suspect is currently being detained at Camp Karingal in Quezon City.
