Iga Swiatek won her third Grand Slam tournament, after defeating Ons Jabeur, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the finals of the US Open 2022. This is her maiden US Open victory. She also became the first Polish player ever to win the US Open title.

Who is Iga Swiatek?

Iga Swiatek was born in the Polish capital Warsaw in 2001. She followed her elder sister Agata’s footsteps and found her passion for tennis. While her sister had to stop playing the game in her teens due to injuries, Swiatek made sure she turns her passion into a career.

The 21-year-old participated in the junior Wimbledon in 2018. She then entered the main draw of the Australian Open the same year. It ended with a second-round exit. She, however, managed to reach the fourth round of the French Open, losing to Romanian star Simona Halep.

Swiatek, then ranked 54, did not win any major tournament before the French Open 2020, becoming the lowest-ranked woman to win the Roland Garros title in the modern era. Post the win, she improved her ranking to No 17. She won the Italian Open (WTA 1000 event) in 2021.

In the 2022 season, she grabbed five titles, including her three WTA 1000 titles at the Qatar Open, Indian Wells, and Miami Open.

With 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams out of action for nearly a year and three-time major champ Ash Barty announcing that she would retire at age 25 and relinquish the No. 1 ranking, Swiatek has emerged as a dominant figure in tennis.

With Saturday’s French Open win, Swiatekun has broken the 34-match winning streak held by Serena Williams, who set the record in 2013. Her unbeaten run equals one by Venus Williams in 2000 as the longest this century.
