Former Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been shot in the leg during a march at Wazirabad, Punjab. Some other people, including Imran Ismail, the former governor of Sindh, and Khan’s manager Rashid, have also sustained injuries.

Early reports suggest that the perpetrator has been arrested.

Who is Imran Khan?

Imran Khan was born in an upper-middle-class family in Lahore on October 5, 1952. He studied at England’s Royal Grammar School Worcester, where he excelled at cricket. At the age of 20, he enrolled in Keble College, Oxford where he graduated in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.

Cricketing career

Imran Khan is considered one of the finest cricketers Pakistan has produced. He made his Test cricket debut against England in 1971 at Edgbaston. Five years later, he returned to Pakistan and secured a permanent place on the national team before eventually becoming the side’s skipper in 1982. He retired in January 1992, playing his last game against Sri Lanka at Faisalabad. Throughout his career, Imran played 88 Test matches, 126 innings, and scored 3807 runs at an average of 37.69.

Political career

Thirteen years after retiring from cricket, Imran Khan founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). In 1997, he ran for the seat of the National Assembly of Pakistan in the Pakistani general election as a candidate from two constituencies – Mianwali and Lahore. He, however, lost both the seats to candidates of Pakistan Muslim League. In the next election, he won from Mianwali.

He eventually became a real threat to the ruling parties in Pakistan as he started holding rallies, which were attended by thousands. During the rallies, he challenged the policies of the government.

In the 2018 General Elections, Khan contested from Bannu, Islamabad, Mianwali, Lahore, and Karachi East. His party won a total of 116 of the 270 seats contested and he was elected prime minister of Pakistan.
