10 of the 13 persons accused of attempting to kill former Major League Baseball player David “Big Papi” Ortiz in Santo Domingo on June 9, 2019, were found guilty by a Dominican Republic court on Monday.

The defendants with the longest penalties of 30 years each in prison were Rolfi Ferreyra Cruz and Eddy Vladimir Feliz Garcia, who are both accused of shooting Ortiz.

Who is Rolfi Ferreyra Cruz?

Rolfi Ferreyra Cruz made news when he was accused of attempting to murder former Major League Baseball player David “Big Papi” Ortiz in 2019.

Cruz, the suspect in a 2017 heist in New Jersey as well , on Sunday in the Dominican Republic admitted to shooting David Ortiz.

Cruz is linked to two armed robberies in Clifton, said the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, according to Joshua Jongsma of the North Jersey Record.

The identities of two suspects in a pair of holdups on December 22 were revealed by Clifton police in January 2018. Cruz eluded capture while the other suspect surrendered himself up to the police.

Cruz may or may not be extradited to the United States to answer to charges related to his involvement in the robberies in New Jersey, according to Jongsma.

After detaining nine people, including Cruz, in connection with the shooting of Ortiz, Dominican police declared at a press conference on Wednesday that they are treating the incident as an attempted assassination.

According to the decision of the First Collegiate Court of Santo Domingo, eight other offenders were given prison terms ranging from 5 to 20 years. The purported attack’s mastermind, Victor Hugo Gomez Vasquez, is one of the three defendants who was exonerated owing to insufficient evidence.

On June 9, 2019, Ortiz was shot by gunman Cruz in Santo Domingo. Sixto David Fernandez was the shooting’s intended target, according to Dominican authorities. At the time of the shooting, he was seated at a table with Ortiz in a bar in Santo Domingo.
