Sanna Marin, 36, is the Prime Minister of Finland. Marin has been in the news
recently after video of her partying and dancing were published. She was seen
partying with Ilmari Nurminen, a member of the Finnish Parliament and Tinni Wikström,
a media anchor. In the footage reported by Finnish media, Marin is seen dancing
exuberantly while people behind her can be heard talking about cocaine, according
to a POLITICO report.

While at
least one of her Parliament colleagues has called on her to take a drug test
and release the results to the public, Marin said: “I have danced, celebrated,
done legal things.”

Who is
Sanna Marin?

Sanna Marin
became Finland’s Prime Minister at the age of 34. She was and remains the
youngest prime minister in the world right now. She is also the Finland’s
youngest PM. Born on November 16, 1985 in Finland capital Helsinki, Marin also
lived in Espoo and Pirkkala before moving to Tampere. Marin had a modest
upbringing. Her parents separated at a young age and she was raised by her
mother and her female partner.

In an
interview in 2015, Sanna Marin said the fact that she could not talk about her
mother being in a same-sex relationship made her feel invisible, the BBC
reported. Marin, in a blog, wrote she took a job at a bakery at the age of 15
and distributed magazines for pocket money when in high school.

Marin’s
political career began at the age of 20. By age 22, she was running for a seat
in Tampere’s council. Tampere is a city located north of Finland capital
Helsinki. Though she lost her first elections, she became leader of the council
by the time she was 27. Her rise through the ranks of Finland’s Social
Democratic Party (SDP) was quick and spectacular.

Marin is
seen to lie on the left of the political spectrum within the SDP and is a
strong advocate of Finland’s welfare state.

In December
2019, Sanna Marin was nominated by the SDP to succeed Antti Rinne as the Prime
Minister of Finland after Rinne failed to work his way around a postal strike.

Sanna Marin’s
term in office has seen several controversies, several with regard to her lifestyle.
In October 2020, Marin’s photograph on fashion magazine trendi where she was
seen wearing a blazer with no shirt underneath drew criticism. While some said
her attire was not suited to the position she occupied, there were others who
posted pictures of themselves dressed similarly in order to support Marin.

In December
2021, Marin faced criticism after she was found partying with her friends after
a colleague of hers tested positive for coronavirus. While she did not break
any prevailing rule, Marin later apologised saying: “I should have used better
judgment and also checked the instructions I received. I am sorry I did not
understand this.”
