Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Edinburgh,
died on Friday. He was 99.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced
the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of
Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor
Castle”, The Royal Family‘s Twitter handle tweeted out on Friday.

The Prince retired from his public role in 2017, and largely
stayed out of public view.

Born into the Greek Royal Family, he never wore a crown himself.

Marrying Elizabeth in 1947, five years before she became the
Queen, he remained at her side for about 65 years, Prince Philip carried out a
total of 22,219 solo public engagements since 1952.

Over the years, he had gotten several times into controversies
over his comments.

“You managed not to get eaten, then?” he
questioned, as per AFP, a British student who had trekked in Papua New Guinea
in 1998.

“If you stay here much longer, you’ll all be slitty-eyed”,
he reportedly said another time in China back in 1986 to a group of British
students.

In January 2019, the prince was involved in an accident near
the royal estate of Sandringham in Eastern England, at an age of 97 years. The
moving away from public life came largely after the incident, and was followed
by the him spending much of 2020 in Windsor Castle due to coronavirus-concerns.
