RCMP Constable Rick O’Brien was shot and killed while carrying out his duty, while two of his fellow officers suffered injuries in the line of service. This heartrending incident sent shockwaves through the community and left an indelible mark on the RCMP.
Who Was Rick O’Brien?
RCMP Constable Rick O’Brien, aged 51, hailed from the Ridge Meadows detachment, where he had distinguished himself as a decorated officer. His recent celebration of seven years of service was cut short tragically, leaving behind a grieving wife and children. Rick O’Brien was not just a devoted officer; he was also a dedicated family man, a pillar of his community, and a beloved figure among his peers.
Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald, Commanding Officer of the B.C. RCMP, stood before the press to deliver the grim news. Simultaneously, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) commenced an inquiry into the actions taken by the police during the incident, aiming to ensure transparency and accountability.

Ridge Meadows RCMP were executing a search warrant in Coquitlam’s City Centre neighborhood, near the intersection of Pinetree Way and Glen Drive when the altercation occurred. This altercation tragically led to multiple officers being injured and the suspect being shot, leaving the community in a state of shock and disbelief.
Eyewitness accounts, offered by those who had unwittingly become observers of the traumatic scene, added a chilling layer of detail to the incident. Carley Hodges, a bystander, recounted the harrowing moments, describing the wounded officer and the frantic efforts to save lives. “And then [there were] cops coming with riot shields, battering rams, and rifles,” she recalled, underscoring the sheer intensity of the situation.
