A police officer identified as Sgt Graham Saville, in the line of duty, was tragically struck by a train while trying to rescue a distressed individual on the railway tracks.
The incident unfolded in Balderton, a residential area near Newark when Nottinghamshire Police responded to a call regarding the well-being of a man at approximately 19:00 BST on a Thursday. Regrettably, the officer has succumbed to the injuries sustained in the line of duty.

Who was Sgt Graham Saville?
Sgt Graham Saville was 46 years old. He was an officer from Nottinghamshire Police stationed at Newark Police Station, He was transported to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre following the incident, but tragically, he did not survive his injuries.
Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell expressed her heartfelt condolences, saying, “Today is a solemn day for the entire police family. Graham was an immensely esteemed and beloved colleague, and his tragic loss while on duty has profoundly shaken us all.”

She continued, “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family, and we are committed to providing them with unwavering support during this unimaginably painful time. It is difficult to convey the depth of sorrow this news has brought to those who cherished and respected Graham.”
Chief Constable Meynell went on to say, “On Thursday, he reported for duty to safeguard the people of Nottinghamshire from harm. His bravery and unwavering dedication as a police officer are evident in the fact that he tragically lost his life while trying to rescue another individual. This speaks volumes about his commitment to protecting and serving our community.”

UK Prime Minister Rishi also made a statement after the incident, “I’m saddened to learn of the passing of Sgt Saville. It is a testament to his bravery that he died in the line of duty and a terrible reminder of the work the police do every day to keep us safe.”
