Last September, King Charles became the new king of England following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth. While he took on the role immediately, his official coronation ceremony has yet to take place. However, the British Royal Family has been planning the event for years, with “Operation Golden Orb” being the code name for the ceremony. Despite the palace’s denial of specific plans for the coronation, we do have some information on what to expect from the event.

The Coronation Ceremony

According to sources, the Golden Orb committee is meeting much more frequently to plan the coronation ceremony. Unlike the previous coronation, there will be a lot less fuss, and guests will not have special chairs commissioned and delivered to their homes. While the details of the ceremony are still being finalized, we can expect a grand and traditional affair. King Charles will be anointed with holy oil, receive the royal regalia, and be crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Invitation

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have received invitations to the coronation ceremony. However, they have not yet confirmed their attendance. A spokesperson for the couple stated that they had received an email correspondence from His Majesty’s office regarding the coronation but did not disclose their decision. It has since been reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have some reasonable demands for attending the ceremony. They have requested that their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, are included in the ceremony and that their entire family is included on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Negotiations for Attendance

Negotiations are ongoing to address Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s demands for attendance. While it is easy to include their children in the ceremony, the balcony request is more complicated. It is said that small children do not typically attend royal events of this scale due to restlessness and tantrums. The Palace is doing everything in its power to not let the negotiations lead to stalemate and cause the couple to not attend. However, if a resolution is not found, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex may not attend. It is also Prince Archie’s birthday on coronation day, and the couple would like some kind of nod to that at a lunch or drinks reception.

While there are still some details to be worked out, King Charles’s coronation promises to be a grand and traditional affair. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s attendance is uncertain, but negotiations are ongoing to address their reasonable demands for attending the ceremony. The British Royal Family’s website provides some insight into what to expect from the ceremony, and we can expect a spectacle fit for a king.
