World population day is celebrated on 11th July every year to create awareness about the issues which lead to a rise in population. This day came into existence in 1987 when the global population reached 5 billion.

The United Nations first took the initiative of celebrating this day after getting influenced by the celebrations of “Five Billion Day”. This day is very significant as it highlights the need to control overpopulation and to make people aware of the reproductive health needs and susceptibilities of women.

A theme is chosen every year by the United Nations and as the population has already touched the 8-billion mark, so the theme for this year is “A world of 8 billion: Towards a resilient future for all – Harnessing opportunities and ensuring rights and choices for all.”

The theme suggests that our mother earth and humanity are facing a threat and that we need to step together to make the world a better place.
