British Prime Minister Boris Johnson married political activist Carrie Symonds over the weekend, AFP reported quoting his office.

“The Prime Minister and Ms Symonds were married yesterday afternoon in a small ceremony at Westminster Cathedral,” a Downing Street spokesman said, as per AFP.

“The couple will celebrate their wedding with family and friends next summer,” he added.

He is only the second British prime minister to marry while in power and the first in nearly two centuries. The last was Robert Jenkinson in 1822.

Who was Robert Jenkinson?

Robert Banks Jenkinson, the second Earl of Liverpool took over the Prime Minister’s office after the assassination of his predecessor Spencer Perceval. He occupied the office from 1812 to 1827. 

In his 37 years as a parliamentarian, Jenkinson also served as leader of the House of Lords, Foreign Secretary and War Secretary.

He married Mary Chester in 1822 after his first wife Louisa, 54, died of a long illness in 1821. Chester and Jenkinson were married by the Lord Bishop of London. She was 45 years old. 

The two knew each other quite well, Mary Chester being Louisa’s close companion.
