Mumbai records 6,123 new COVID-19 cases, highest-ever single-day spike

  • The total COVID-19 tally of Mumbai now stand at 3,91,751,
  • The surge comes after a day the city registered 35,952 new COVID-19 cases on Friday
  • Mumbai on Saturday announced a complete ban on all sorts of public gatherings

Mumbai, the financial capital of India, reported 6123 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, taking the total number of cases in the city to 3,91,751, reported ANI.

The surge comes two days after the city registered 35,952 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, which marks the previous high in daily infection tally.

Taking cognizance of the virus situation, Mumbai on Saturday announced a complete ban on all sorts of public gatherings including religious and political, reported PTI.

The Maharashtra government also ordered the closing of malls, restaurants, and gardens between 8 pm to 7 am from Saturday. Citizens will not be allowed to visit beaches at these hours as well, an official told PTI.

Amid all the restrictions, the government has, however, exempted food delivery services.  

India recorded 62,258 new coronavirus cases on Friday, the highest single-day rise so far this year while total 291 deaths were reported taking the nationwide tally to 161,240, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Saturday.
