Rakesh Jhunjhunwala dies: India pays its tributes to the Big Bull

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, the ace Indian investor, died at 62. Also known as the Big Bull or Warren Buffet of India, Jhunjhunwala had an impressive portfolio and a net worth of over Rs 40,000 crores as of 2022. A veteran trader with a keen eye for stocks, Jhunjhunwala’s demise has been mourned by many in India.

He met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2021, and the Bharatiya Janata Party member shared an image from the time with the message: “Rakesh Jhunjhunwala was indomitable. Full of life, witty and insightful, he leaves behind an indelible contribution to the financial world. He was also very passionate about India’s progress. His passing away is saddening. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also sent his condolences to the Mumbai-born trader’s family, noting “Anguished to learn about the passing away of Rakesh Jhunjhunwala Ji. His vast experience and understanding of the stock market have inspired countless investors.”
Union Cabinet Minister Smriti Irani also remembered Jhunjhunwala’s words to her, tweeting “He was tenacious , he was tender , he was graceful, he was as my gentle giant . Bhaiyya always told me ‘ apan apne dam par jeyenge ‘ [we will live on our own terms] .. and he lived on his own terms ..”

She added that the legend will continue to live.
Aaditya Thackeray also paid his respects to Jhunjhunwala’s family while bidding “adieu” to the Big Bull of Dalal Street. Controversial filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri also mourned the death, saying “OMG. Rakesh Jhunjhunwala ji was such a passionate patriot, financial genius with great sense of humour and a positive worldview. A visionary, a great human and a friend.”
Legendary cricketer Virender Sehwag also paid his respects, saying “End of an Era as the Big Bull of the Dalal Street , #RakeshJhunjhunwala passes away. Condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Others like finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Suhel Seth also remembered Jhunjhunwala fondly, with the former calling him a “leader in his own right” and the latter praising the investor as a “fine” and “astute” man.
