Texas Governor Greg Abbott signs law to allow takeaway sale of alcoholic drinks

The state of Texas will be permitting consumers to buy takeaway alcoholic beverages in a sealed container from restaurants and other outlets dealing in food and drinks, according to a new bill signed by Governor Greg Abbott on Wednesday.

The bill was authored and advocated by Texas Senator Kelly Hancock and Representative Charlie Green.

The bill clarifies that the outlet providing the alcoholic beverages will be directed to only sell the drink in a container sealed before it is handed over to the customer. A zip tie seal would also be allowed to complete the product’s packaging, NBC reported.

Abbott said in a video posted to Twitter announcing the bill signing, “It turned out that Texas liked it so much that the Texas Legislature wanted to make that permanent law in the state of Texas.”

The new law will allow those with mixed beverage and private club permits to serve alcoholic drinks with food orders. 

The sale of ale and beer in similar formats will also be allowed after September 1 this year, NBC reported quoting the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission. 

Alcohol delivery will also be allowed with food orders and permitted third parties can also make those deliveries on the restaurant’s behalf.
